Causes of pain
This could be disease related such as cancer metastases and compression of the surrounding
structures. This includes:
Bone pain due to cancer metastases or inability to tolerate
pressure
Liver pain arising from hepatomegaly (enlargement of the
liver) and tenderness of upper right quadrant.
Nerve pain (compression of nerves by tumour)
Raised intracranial pressure
Cramping pain in the abdomen (due to bowel obstruction or
bladder spasm)
Treatment induced (chemotherapy neuropathy,
opioid induced constipation and damaged mucosal membrane due to radiation)
Debility related such as pressure sores arising from prolonged period of
confinement in bed, oral candiasis and severe cachexia.
Other conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis.
