Professionals in the palliative care team:
Specialist palliative care team consists of a consultant, doctors and community clinical specialist
nurses. The community clinical specialist nurses have previous experience working in hospice and
have also received further training in palliative care. The team can be based in a hospital setting or in
the community ( GP surgery or at hospice) and can provide knowledge on how to manage common symptoms. For example pain, nausea and vomiting as well as providing support to allow families and patients to make informed choices on treatment.
Doctors or consultants on the team also work closely with the specialist nurses and leads the team as well as listening to the wishes and concerned of the patient. The doctor will sit down with the patient to discuss any concerns or desires they may have in order to devise the care plan for the patient. This allows the treatment plan to be tailored to the patient’s wishes.
