Palliative Care
Diarrhoea cause
Infection
Infections such as clostridium difficiles (C.diff) can cause diarrhoea known as C.diff associated diarrhoea (CDAD) and this is more common in patients who use nasogastric tubes, immunocompromised or on chemotherapy.
Cancer therapy
Chemotherapy agents such as 5 flurouracil causes disruption to the cellular activity of cancerous and healthy cells. This can damage the protective lining of the GI system and impair the re-absorption of water and electrolytes into the body. Therefore, watery stools are formed due to an excess of water.
Other causes
Concurrent disease such as diabetes mellitus, imflammatory bowel disease(IBS), irritable bowel syndrome, hyperthyroidism and medications such as NSAID, antibiotics and antacids can increase the risk of diarrhoea.
