Palliative Care
Examples of spiritual interventions
Examples of spiritual care:
Presence
Patients may feel lonely and unwanted, so the basic yet essential act of being
present with the patient can ease those type of negative feelings. (Ellenberg 2005,
Puchalski et al 2006, Zikorus 2007).
Encouragement of reminiscence
Looking at photographs from the past can elicit joyful memories and achievements
that may have been forgotten. This reminds patients of the positive events that have
occurred in life and allow retrieval in the meaning of life.
This is particularly useful in spiritual pain because it increases confidence by remembering how they resolve difficulties in th past and reduces boredom.
Chaplains and religious leaders
In religious patients, discussing possible unresolved matter that is causing concern
man be beneficial, for example providing reassurance on faith when uncertain.
Furthermore, patients can feel comforted that others are praying for them which
allows the jouney towards death to be less lonely.
