Drugs used in syringe drivers

 

Below are the common drugs used in syringe drivers, all information was obtained from the North Cumbria palliative care website;

 

  • Analgesics i.e. opioids and diamorphine is the opioid of choice because it is very soluble so larger amount can be given in smaller volume.1/3 of the oral morphine dose given in the last 24 hours can be given for the 24 hour subcutaneous dose of diamorphine.

  • Antiemetics i.e. haloperidol, cyclizine, metoclopramide and levomepromomazine

  • Sedatives i.e. midazolam

  • Antisecretory drugs i.e. hyoscine hydrobromide and glycopyrrolate
